POND SCUM: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly About Algae

August 24, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

Do you use products from algae every day? Most people immediately say, “No Way”! This presentation will change your answer. Tom Dempster will convince you that everyone uses at least one product from algae every day. You’ll also learn about a variety of grocery store items that contain ingredients from algae including your favorite foods and cosmetics, as well as health and home maintenance products. In addition to the benefits of algae, we will discuss many of the bad (and ugly) impacts ranging from green pools and lakes to toxins in shellfish and drinking water.

Algae are very diverse and robust organisms that may be found in every habitat on Earth. Scientists are hard at work trying to identify the good ones and discover environmentally friendly way to eliminate the bad ones. We’ll take a look at modern algae farming to produce good species, as well as current approaches to reduce the harmful effects of algae.

This FREE presentation is open to the public. Registration is not required to attend.
